The stock GT-R intercooler is a good upgrade over the one fitted to the GT-X in terms of being front mounted, but it's still quite small and restrictive at higher power levels. There are many options available to upgrade here, and here are a few examples.
One option is to use an intercooler from a Mitsubishi Evo IV - VIII. Here's s shot of an EVO VI intercooler mounted on the front of my old GT-R. The original intercooler is sitting on the floor underneath to give you an idea of the difference in size. The bumper support which carries the spotlights is still in place here, with the bumper skin removed.
With the bumper support removed, you can see the extended top pipe to return to the original GTR intercooler pipe, and also the new inlet pipe on the bottom right hand corner. Initially, I used rubber pipes, and these were later swapped for Samco Silicon Hoses.
This shot shows the left hand side of the intercooler, and the U-bend required to rejoin the original pipework. On the final installation, I moved the intercooler to the left of the grill, to allow more room for the pipes, so the core is mounted slightly off centre.
Here's the finished article, on the car with the Blue Samco Silicon Hoses in place. All that is required to fit this intercooler is a length of 63mm OD tubing, 2 x 90degree, 63mm bore bends and 1 x 63mm - 52mm 90 degree reducing bend.
My latest GT-R came from Japan with this Blitz Intercooler already fitted...
