Clutch Upgrade

The standard GT-R clutch is ok for standard cars and mild boost upgrades, however it struggles to cope with large increases in torque, and is unsuitable for fast standing starts.

In the time i have owned my GT-Rs, I have tried various upgrade options, and struggled to find anything that would cope with high boost repeatedly. The best compromise I have been able to find so far is to use an OMP Paddle plate, along with a modifed Mazdaspeed cover assembly. This provides increased clamping force and increased heat sink capacity, and has proved a major improvement on the stock clutch. The Mazdaspeed cover original is used with a Mazdaspeed disk, and the disk is much thinner than a standard or OMP disk, hence the cover has a thicker clamping face. I took the cover to a locak machine shop, who machined it to the same tickness as a standard clutch, so that it could be used with the OMP plate. The pedal is heavier with the Mazdaspeed cover, however I find the weight perfectly acceptable. The clutch does occasionally slip with hard use, but is a vast improvement over the stock one!

Any upgrade to the clutch will place increased stress on the reputedly weak GT-R gearbox, hence I would only advise an upgrade be carried out where it becomes necessary. Replacement gearboxes and components are notoriously difficult to source, and a stronger clutch will considerably shorten the gearbox lifespan.
